Technology Integration and Outdoor Learning: JASON Learning, iNaturalist and entomology tools
(Sessions 3-4, Table 19) by Hannah Cotten - 5th Grade Teacher - Hill Elementary
I recently received a travel grant with JASON Learning and researched in the Amazon rain forest this summer. Additionally, I was asked to travel to Malaysia with JASON to facilitate the learning of students at a science conference and biodiversity survey. In learning alongside real scientists in the field, I discovered how and what tools entomologists use to collect and study insects. Additionally, I learned about and used an incredible app, iNaturalist, that helps individuals identify species using facial recognition and a network of professional and citizen scientists to further our global biodiversity surveys. I also learned about the online resources and travel opportunities through JASON Learning as well as other travel grant opportunities. This page is filled with resources for AISD teachers to help you get your kids outside, just like real scientists in the field, and experience working with scientists in the field as well.
Background information and Login Information for JASON Learning.
JASON Learning: An online resource that connects teachers and students to scientists in the field with a library of availalbe lesson plans and circultum. DELL has purchased the rights for AISD to use JASON Learning. This is a FREE resource available for AISD teachers! Addtionally, JASON Learning selects a few teachers and students each year to travel abroad and learn alongside scientists in the field. To apply, visit their website with the link below!
To log into JASON Learning and access their online library as an AISD teacher:
1. Go to "www.jason.org" 2. Click "Login" in the upper right. 3. Click the "Sign on with Google Apps" button. If prompted to select a Google account or if asked to login by Google, use your district Google account. Follow the prompts from there. Your first time logging in as a teacher will prompt you to answer a few questions to activate for the school year.
Note: Soon, there will be an option for Austin ISD teachers to assign JASON resources directly into the new BLEND / Canvas platform that Austin launched this year. JASON has developed an LTI tool for that platform and is working with Austin ISD's tech team on final changes before that JASON tool is launched in BLEND.
