Job Descriptions:
News Reporter- News reporters gather information, develop factual stories and produce articles or multimedia to present in order to keep the public updated on current events in our school, city, state, nation and world. Whatever you find interesting, report about it! You can report any way you like (powerpoint, written article, cut out of newspaper, print an article and present on it..)
Zoologist- Zoologists are responsible for observing animals in their natural habitats and looking after them in a laboratory or zoo setting in order to gain as much information about animal life as possible. Zoologists usually specialize in a particular family or species of animal. In our class, you will be responsible for caring for our class pets, while also observing and measuring growth and living patterns.
Website Manager- A web content manager is responsible for the information that appears on a company's website. They work closely with project teams, editors, developers and designers to coordinate the site content and make sure it caters to the needs of the target audience. If you have excellent writing skills, are well organized and can motivate a team, then this is the job for you! You will need lots of creative ideas and the ability to work to deadlines. You will be managing our classroom website, The Discovery Den, adding pictures, blogging, and editing. You will learn how to design websites and manage them in a timely and effective manner.
Ecologist- Ecologists are concerned with ecosystems as a whole, the abundance and distribution of organisms (people, plants, animals), and the relationships between organisms and their environment. Ecologists usually choose a specialist area (freshwater, marine, terrestrial, fauna, flora) and then carry out a range of tasks relating to that area. In The Discovery Den, as the ecologist, you will research the flora and fauna in the area and implement ways of encouraging the ecosystems to thrive. You will also water the indoor plants while observing phototropism, growth rates and soil retention.
Sanitation Engineer- A sanitation engineer inspects and regulates sanitary condition of public places, such as markets, parks, and camps. You will be responsible for overseeing and managing proper waste management. If you want to go above and beyond, you can designs and direct construction and operation of hygienic projects such as waterworks, sewage, more effective and ecofriendly garbage and trash disposal, drainage systems, and ecofriendly insect and rodent control projects.
Photojournalist- Photojournalists typically perform their jobs at awards ceremonies, political rallies and sporting events. Individuals in this field are expected to have the ability to operate both film and digital cameras and be considerably skilled in editing photos using digital software. Whenever there is a sporting event, activity, lab, fundraiser, or anything news worthy or captivating, the photojournalist will capture images and tell their story.
Computer Technician- Certified computer technicians repair and service computers, servers and other hardware for individuals and organizations. In our class, you will service the innovation station, netbooks, and ipads, insuring they are stored properly, charged and working well. You will learn more about the different devices in the classroom and insure that all updates occur regularly. You will also study and research new apps and other forms of technology that could be used in the classroom. If your teacher is absent, you will act as a helper for any sub with the innovation station and other devices.
Interior designer- Beautiful, comfortable indoor spaces don't just happen by accident. They are carefully planned by interior designers who combine their artistic and technical skills to create safe and functional spaces where we learn, work, live and play. It is the job of our interior designer to ensure that The Discovery Den is the best possible learning environment. He or she will research and discover new ways to improve the classroom and help implement those plans.
Fashion stylist- Fashion stylists coordinate outfits from an array of clothing and accessories. They may dress mannequins for retail store displays or photo shoots and assist store customers with choosing clothing and accessories to complement their body type and lifestyle. In our class, we have a beautiful, but bare skeleton, named Bonita. She needs some clothing and accessories and it is your job to dress her accordingly.
Door holder- Everyone should be a door holder for everyone. If you see someone in need of assistance, or near a door, you should always lend a hand, as long as it is safe to do so. In this job, you are to help others realize the importance of kindness and being polite. When a women, child, man or woman is near you and a door, lend a hand and open the door. (Remember to also abide by the rules. When an adult is outside a door that is locked for safety, do not open the door. However, if it is safe, be kind.)
Line leader- This job is more than just being in the front of the line. This job requires leadership. You must act as a role model for the other students. You are not to walk until all others in line are acting appropriately, in a straight line, not talking. If anyone starts disrupting others, especially in the main building, the line leader can stop at any point and remind the class of what is expected.
Clipboard Carrier- This job requires a good memory. Each time we rotate, you must remember to take the clip board to the next teacher, and not forget it! On this clipboard is a list of all students and any infractions given. You will act as the unofficial deputy police officer.
Librarian- Accessing information, cataloging, and management are just some of the concepts necessary for a Librarian. In The Discovery Den, the librarian ensures that all books are properly stored and organized. The Librarian also researches other books that would encourage exploration and discovery in the sciences and instructs the teacher which books should be purchased.
Chair Monitor- This job requires constant oversight. The Chair monitor must remind others to push in their chairs, while still remaining kind and not overbearing.
Science table cleaner- After each lab, the science table cleaner will ensure that the lab area is clean and safe. If any materials need to be disposed of or removed, the cleaner will do so.
Commons cleaner- The Commons is a public space and needs to be maintained by all. However, the Commons cleaner needs to be the manager and oversee that it is properly taken care of and tidy.
Research Engineer- Research Engineers apply their expertise and knowledge to technical projects, finding innovative, cost-effective means to improve research, techniques, procedures, and/or products and technologies. Responsibilities include developing, conducting, and evaluating new approaches to meet project objectives faster and more efficiently in the classroom. You are always looking for a better, more effective way to do something.
