Why do we need to compost? Why do we need to recycle? Where does your trash go? What is a landfill? Why should we care about recycling and composting? What do we need to throw away in the trash and what can we throw away in the compost or recycle bin?? It's always a challenge at first to know what to put where. This will help you learn and practice so we can help our planet!

COMPOST! COMPOST! COMPOST!
If it once was living, you can compost it!
WHY COMPOST?
Greenhouse gasses are contributing mainly to global warming, but you can help stop rising temperatures. Not only does burning fossil fuels give off greenhouse gasses, but also dumping all of our trash into landfills. When trash in the landfills tries to decompose without oxygen, it releases methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas that is 21% more harmful to our atmosphere than carbon dioxide. But by starting a compost pile, not only will less trash be added to the ever growing landfills, but your food waste will be able to access oxygen while it composts so that it does not emit methane. As a bonus your community gets to reuse the compostable waste in a beneficial way: more fresh, nutritious soil.

WHY RECYCLE?
WHAT DO I RECYCLE?
re·cy·cle: to take an old item and change it (in a big way) into a NEW item. Example: a water bottle in a recycling bin could be melted and reformed to make a NEW water bottle.
Landfills:
1. Take up habitat, living, and recreation space
2. Generate and release methane gas, a powerful and harmful greenhouse gas
4. Prevent or slow down decomposition of items so that they remain intact longer, sometimes for thousands to millions of years.
Why avoid landfills as much as possible:

COMPELLING STATISTICS
Landfilling
"In 2015, about 137.7 million tons of MSW were landfilled. Food was the largest component at about 22 percent. Plastics accounted for about 19 percent, paper and paperboard made up about 13 percent, and rubber, leather and textiles comprised about 11 percent. Other materials accounted for less than 10 percent each."
