Yesterday, we had our first Latin class in Social Studies. Mr. Hargrove is our Latin teacher. He uses technology and BLEND often in the classroom. Students will have Latin every Monday for 30 minutes each week, learning about the roots of words, Roman history, and other Latin-y things :)
LEARNING THE UNITED STATES
Don't forget to be studying your states! Here is the link for the fun game to practice. You only need to be studying the New England States: Main, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Get your parents signature by THIS FRIDAY for the first region of states. (this means you need to take home your social studies notebook, where the sheet is located on the first page).

MATTER
We learned that all things are made of matter. Matter takes up space and you can feel it, and that includes things like gases and air! We know the states of matter, solid, liquid and gas, but today we learned how to measure mass with certain tools, like a triple beam balance and a double pan balance. That was fun, practicing measuring masses!
We also learned about the difference between mass and weight today. Mass is the amount of matter inside something. Weight is the amount of gravity that pulls on an object's mass. So, mass doesn't change, no matter where you are in the universe, but weight changes, depending on what planet you are standing on. If we travel to the moon, since the moon has less mass, it has less gravitational pull. So we would have less mass and actually feel lighter. But our actual mass would stay the same. The only way to change our mass would be to cut our arm off or go on a crazy diet or something.
We will continue to measure mass tomorrow, as well as measure displaced volume using graduated cylinders. We will also take a look outside and check on our artificial bromeliads. After the crazy weather this weekend, we probably have some cool critters and over flowing cups of water to observe! We will be sure to take pictures!
